In Korea, the price on the menu is usually the price you pay. In the United States, it's a different story. At most sit-down restaurants, customers are expected to add a tip of about 18 to 20 percent to the bill.

Why so much? In many states, servers are paid a low base wage, and tips make up a big part of their income. For them, a tip isn't a bonus. It's how they pay the rent.

Lately, though, many Americans say they feel "tip fatigue." Tablets at coffee shops and even self-checkout counters now ask for 15, 20, or 25 percent. People often skip the tip at a counter, but at a full-service restaurant, leaving nothing is still seen as rude.
